A group of French university students, participating in a study tour organized by the Ningbo University-University of Angers Joint Institute, have embarked on a cultural journey to Huzhou in Zhejiang province to experience the enchanting intangible cultural heritage of Shuanglin silk damask.

Shuanglin silk damask, or Shuanglin ling juan, produced in Shuanglin town and woven from pure silk, is a prized traditional silk product featuring a soft and light texture.

Ling juan is a traditional Chinese term that collectively refers to damask silk and spun silk. Damask silk features intricate woven patterns, while spun silk is characterized by its plain, solid-colored appearance.

At the Shuanglin Silk Damask Factory, the visitors observed the seamless integration of traditional weaving techniques with modern technology, participated in traditional processes such as paper mounting and material backing, and crafted their own silk souvenirs.

"Touching the silk for the first time truly helped me understand the essence of 'as thin as a cicada's wings'," said Lola, a French student.

The cultural exploration continued in Shuanglin Ancient Town. In the silk workshop, artisans guided the visitors in crafting silk zodiac ornaments and experiencing scroll rubbing. Activities at Wenchang Pavilion, such as drumming and hanging prayer plaques, offered a direct encounter with Shuanglin's rich cultural legacy.
