A 90-year-old man from Huzhou, East China's Zhejiang province received his driver's license on Aug 9 after passing all the tests required.
Ni Wenjun was the first 90-year-old person from the city to have obtained the driving license after the nation relaxed age requirements.
He is also most likely to be the oldest person in the province and even the whole country to obtain a motor vehicle driving license since no reports indicating other people his age had also received their driver's license were found, according to local media outlet hz66.com.
In October of last year, China removed the provision that people had to be 70 years old or younger to apply for a driving license for small cars and mopeds.
In addition to the usual tests, applicants aged 70 and above are required to pass an additional test on memory, judgment, and reflexes, as well as a physical examination, according to regulations.
The additional test is free of charge and is valid for three months. Those who fail can take a make-up test within three months.
It took Ni 218 days to obtain the driving license, after he registered for the test in January.
His decision was fully supported by his family, as it has long been a wish of his to receive his driver's license, according to his son Ni Yuanzheng.
The newly linensed Ni said that he hopes to drive to Hangzhou to visit his family in the near future.
