The former Residence of Zhang Shiming is a must-visit attraction in Nanxun Ancient Town, a national 5A scenic spot in Huzhou, East China's Zhejiang province.

Zhang Shiming was one of the richest merchants in Jiangnan, the area located south of the Yangtze River.

Featuring a combination of Chinese and western elements, his mansion now has a history of nearly 120 years and has been dubbed the "first private house in Jiangnan" due to its unique style, magnificent structure and exquisite craftsmanship.

The glass panels in the house feature a variety of patterns including flowers, fruits and vegetables, and are said to be crafted in a small town in France.

Even museums in France have only a dozen pieces of such glass panels left. In Zhang's house, there are more than 70 pieces.

A piece of glass like this was valued at 50 grams of gold a hundred years ago, according to a local artisan surnamed Shan who has been dedicated to restoring old houses for over 20 years.

The unique characteristic of these glass panels is that they can remain spotless without cleaning.

Such is the renown of this glass that there is even a saying in the ancient town which goes, "Such a piece of glass can be exchanged for a decent house.”

The building, except for the rooms upstairs, is currently open to visitors now.
