Guangzhou metro completes 5G network upgrade

Updated : 2024-10-25

The 5G communications network upgrade on the northern extension sections of Guangzhou Metro Lines 5 and 3 was recently completed – enabling continuous 5G signal coverage between all sections and platforms of the metro network of the capital city of South China's Guangdong province.

In addition to introducing 5G signals on new lines, the project has comprehensively upgraded the mobile signals on the existing metro network lines – allowing passengers to enjoy smoother network services both on platforms and in moving trains.

The signal upgrade covers nearly 800 kilometers of two-way tracks on the 14 lines, with a long transformation distance, a short implementation period and high safety risks.

It is rated to be an exception in the field of urban rail transit public network coverage projects and has become the largest demonstration benchmark for 5G signal upgrades in the national rail transit system.

After achieving continuous 5G signal coverage, the average perceived speed of trains in tunnel scenarios during operation has increased from 70-80 megabits per second (Mbps) to 400-600 Mbps, boosting the speed of internet surfing by passengers.

Moving forwards, plans are for the Guangzhou Metro to collaborate with Guangdong Tower to continue promoting the deep coverage of the 5G communications networks on the metro lines – providing passengers with more advanced communications technology and network experiences.
