Whampoa Military Academy Theater in Guangzhou well acclaimed

Located on Changzhou Island in Huangpu district, the Huangpu military academy theater was transformed from surrounding old factories, integrating theater and cultural tourism facilities.

Since its opening in February this year, it's received widespread acclaim, becoming one of the most highly esteemed new attractions in the region.

The overall project planner, Shen Kang, said the challenge was in connecting the history of the Whampoa Military Academy with modern life and transforming the old industrial buildings into a brand-new and happening cultural scene.

Lead designer Wang Ge said the Whampoa Military Academy was a historical and cultural intellectual property with immense cultural tourism potential. 

By deeply exploring the historical significance of it and creating experiential scene spaces, its potential could be unleashed to carry on the cultural heritage, Wang added.

Huangpu is upgrading and transforming the old site of the military academy to create a themed cultural tourism district.

The design team is converting old factories and warehouses into immersive themed theaters, optimizing tour routes and enriching visitor experiences along the way.

The interior design of the theater is filled with ingenuity, preserving the framework structure of the old buildings – enabling stage lifts and using multimedia technology to narrate heroic stories.

The project was selected for the national fine arts exhibition's architectural art section – showcasing the design team's efforts to integrate art, culture and life experiences.

Wang added that by incorporating high-tech design elements into the theater, the aim was to enhance people's experiences, promote culture and activate the vitality of cultural tourism development.
