Guangzhou High-Tech District ranked fourth among 157 national high-tech industrial development zones last year, according to a comprehensive assessment by the Torch High Technology Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
In 2021, local GDP exceeded 415.8 billion yuan ($65.82 billion), a growth rate of more than 8 percent. The output value of industrial enterprises above designated size was 877.1 billion yuan, accounting for 40 percent of Guangzhou's total. Investment in local R&D reached 20.92 billion yuan.
Guangzhou High-Tech District is currently home to 1,009 scientific research institutions and 1,204 high-level talents, of which 106 are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The district is home to three 100-billion-yuan industrial clusters revolving around automobiles, electronics and energy, as well as four 50-billion-yuan industrial clusters revolving around biomedicine, high-end chemicals, food and beverages, and electrical machinery. Meanwhile, the district has created strong momentum in emerging industries such as high-end scientific instruments, cutting-edge life science, and frontier new materials.
There are now more than 20,000 science and technology small and medium sized enterprises and over 3,500 national high-tech enterprises in Guangzhou High-Tech District.
