Huangpu to launch free HPV vaccination drive

Guangzhou's Huangpu district will begin free vaccinations against the human papillomavirus (HPV) this year.

A 2022-24 work plan was released by the Guangzhou municipal health commission, Guangzhou municipal education bureau, Guangzhou municipal finance bureau, and the Women's Federation of Guangzhou in January.

According to this plan, the city will offer free bivalent HPV vaccines to all its female students 14 years or younger with informed consent when they are ready to go to junior high school.

The district health and educational authorities will organize government funded vaccination drives every September to November. It is expected that the HPV vaccination rate of females aged under 15 years old will reach 90 percent in 2030.

Cervical cancer has the highest incidence rate of malignant tumor development in Chinese females. The bivalent HPV vaccine is designed to protect against Type 16 and Type 18 HPV, the two most common strains of the virus that can cause cervical cancer in women. 

The promotion of HPV vaccination among young females has been listed as one of this year's top 10 livelihood projects for women and children in Guangdong province, according to the Women's Federation of Guangdong.
