Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway to be expanded

Updated : 2021-02-10

The six-lane Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway is set to be expanded to 10-12 lanes at a cost of 47.1 billion yuan ($7.3 billion), after the project began inviting engineering work bids on Feb 8.

Stretching 122.8 kilometers, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway was the first expressway jointly built by Guangdong and Hong Kong. It has greatly contributed to socioeconomic links between Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong since its opening on July 1, 1997.

The expressway is now one of the busiest of its kind in China, with its traffic volume reaching 51,500 in 1998, 300,000 in 2006 and 592,800 in 2017. This new expansion comes in response to increasingly prominent congestion problems.

According to the bid invitation public notice, the expansion work will span five years and stretch 118.2 km from Guangzhou's Huangcun Interchange to Shenzhen's Huanggang Toll Station. Upon completion, travel from Huangpu to Dongguan and Shenzhen will become easier.
