Information Times: Huangpu takes effective control on imported infections

Guangzhou's Huangpu district had received 22,595 international arrivals since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year until Oct 9. A total of 21,450 passengers were put under quarantine, of which 19,267 had already been released.

Huangpu set up areas for concentrated and medical observation on March 28, while work teams consisting of district health and public security officials, as well as subdistrict work staff, have been sent to designated hotels to oversee quarantine in 24-hour rotations.

He Jiying, a member of one such team, hasn't returned home for nearly 200 days since April. She has been busy at the hotels, ready to handle emergency cases, as well as inspect the work of security guards and the conditions of people under quarantine.

In May, a 20-year-old boy entered Huangpu from Thailand. He spent all his savings on the trip back to China and his family was unable to pay for the quarantine fees. Suffering from both the financial burden and psychological pressure, he repeatedly asked to leave the hotel.

She persuaded the hotel to provide him with free meals for 14 days, as well as raised 6,048 yuan ($898) to help him pay for quarantine expenses and to return to his hometown in Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture, Sichuan province.
