The Huangpu district of Guangzhou city, capital of Guangdong province, is putting forward a new development strategy that makes the Huangpu Laboratory the science innovation leader and creates a "1+18" major technology innovation platform based on the district’s leading enterprises, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and advanced universities.
The “1” refers to the construction of the Huangpu Laboratory. The laboratory will be established as a strategic innovation system in Guangzhou Science City, important in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the whole country, taking the Oak Ridge National Laboratory of the United States, the Shanghai Zhangjiang Laboratory and the Zhejiang Lab of China as its benchmarks.
The “18” refers to the following high-level research and development institutions that together form an important center supporting international science and technology innovation and are part of the national science center of China.
Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)
The CAS Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health were launched to support the development of the biomedical industry and speed up pre-research on a "Human Cell Lineage" scientific device.
GBA National Nanotechnology Innovation Institute (the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology)
Based on the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, the institute will construct seven technology platforms including a “nanotechnology general infrastructure” and become the world's top original technology output facility with an investment of 20 billion yuan ($2.83 billion).
Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the GBA branch institute (Terahertz National Science Center)
Altogether 1.2 billion yuan ($170 million) is invested in the first-stage of the project. The center will become a terahertz innovation science frontier and an integrated innovation chain involved in fundamental research, core devices, system integration and engineering applications in industrialization.
Guangdong GBA Integrated Circuits and System Application Institute
The institute, with an investment of 1.4 billion yuan, focuses on the construction of high-end integrated circuit testing and EDA (electronics design automation) common technology research, development and service. It carries out research on key technologies of high-end chips in automotive electronics and commercial aerospace to promote China chips research and development.
Guangzhou Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences
The institute’s first-stage investment is 350 million yuan. It focuses on global frontier AI research, explores innovation in smart transportation, smart finance, smart city and smart healthcare, creates an open platform of AI technology and scene generation and cultivates AI innovation ecology.
Hard & Core Technology Institute, Xi'an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Engaging in the areas of hard & core technology such as commercial aerospace and optoelectronic chips, the institute transforms for market advanced hard & core technology innovation achievements, creating a new platform for the industrialization of scientific achievements in a pattern of “research institutions + angel funds + entrepreneurial services + science education”.
