Chinese autonomous driving forerunner WeRide, a local taxi service operator and a Guangzhou-based investment company - SCI Group - announced on Aug 7 that they plan to build a joint venture - WeRide Robotaxi - aimed at developing solutions based on L4-level autonomous driving technology.
It will be the first driverless service provider in such a first-tier city in China and will offer travel services such as online car-hailing and ride-sharing.
A robotaxi developed by Chinese artificial intelligence giant Baidu was put into use in Changsha, Central China's Hunan province.
Early last November WeRide joined hands with Guangzhou's Baiyun Taxi Group and Guangzhou Automobile Group to launch the country's first L4-level autonomous driving taxi.
WeRide will now develop more electric new energy vehicles to expand its L4-level self-driving taxi fleet with its partners.
