International Business Daily: GHIDZ aims to boost high-tech cooperation

A group of 13 scientists and scholars from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia recently staged 29 high-tech projects at a roadshow in the Guangzhou Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone (GHIDZ).

The experts, including three academicians, communicated with participating companies on technologies and projects involving biomedicine, artificial intelligence, environmental protection, new energy and new materials.

The roadshow, supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and sponsored by the UNSW, attracted more than 70 high-tech enterprises as a platform for transforming scientific and technological achievements and communication with investment agencies.

About 10 agreements of intention of cooperation were reached at the event. 

As a member of the Group of Eight, a coalition of Australia’s leading research-intensive universities, the UNSW is ranked 45th in the 2019 QS World University Rankings.

The MOST set up China’s first overseas innovation park in the university in April 2016.

GHIDZ is among the first batch of high-tech industrial development zones and is ranked as a national demonstration base for innovation and entrepreneurship.

It is a national independent innovation demonstration zone in the Pearl River Delta, a scientific and technological innovation corridor in the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao region, and a core and main engine for the international scientific and technological innovation center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

It has been actively developing the IAB (next generation of information technology, artificial intelligence, and biological medicine) and NEM (new energy and materials) industries.

The zone is home to 3,500 high-tech firms with an output value accounting for 78 percent of the city’s total.

It houses 1,036 high-end research institutes, and 21 state-level research institutes. A group of the world’s top laboratories, such as the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, an innovation center of Oxford University, and the Guangzhou Regenerative Medicine and Health Guangdong Laboratory, have settled in the zone.

Leading players in IAB industries, including LG OLED, GE Biopharma, BeiGene, Skyworth, and Guangzhou CanSemi Technology Inc have been launched there.

In recent years, the zone has been integrating itself into international scientific and technological cooperation through various policies on boosting industrial development and attracting talents.
