Hechi is in the northwest part of Guangxi and the south of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau on an important route to the coast. It has the city of Liuzhou to the east, Nanning, the capital of Guangxi, to the south, Baise to the west, and the Qiannan Buyei and Miao prefectures to the north. The city runs 228 kilometers from east to west and 260 kilometers from north to south, for a total area of 33,500 square kilometers.

Hechi has a complex terrain, with mountains and an extensive karst formations accounting for 66 percent of the urban area, for which it is famous in Southwest China. It is higher in the northwestern part than in the southwest and has Jiuwan Mountain to the north, Phoenix and Dongfeng mountains to the northwest, and Duyang and Qinglong mountains to the west. Its Wuming Peak in the village of Dongxing is 1,693 meters above sea level and the highest point in Hechi.
