Wang Weizhong, governor of Guangdong province, met with a delegation led by Afioga Fiame Naomi Mataafa, prime minister of Samoa, in Guangzhou on November 24.
Wang welcomed Fiame and her delegation, highlighting the strong and enduring friendship between China and Samoa. He noted that Samoa was one of the first Pacific island nations to establish diplomatic relations with China, and under this framework, cooperation between Guangdong and Samoa has deepened significantly. In 2023, Guangdong accounted for one-seventh of China-Samoa trade, while key projects supported by Guangdong, including the China-Samoa Friendship Park and Samoa Cultural and Arts Centre, have been successfully completed in recent years.
Wang said Guangdong is fully implementing the guiding principles of the third plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee. The province remains committed to deepening reforms, expanding high-level opening-up and pushing forward high-quality development to advance Chinese modernization.
Wang said that, with 2025 marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Samoa, Guangdong aims to deepen exchanges and advance collaboration in healthcare, tourism, and disaster prevention, contributing more to China-Samoa friendship.
Fiame expressed her gratitude for Guangdong's warm reception and congratulated the province on its remarkable achievements. She shared her positive impressions of Guangdong during this visit and noted the strong foundation of cooperation between Samoa and Guangdong. Fiame expressed hope for further strengthening cooperation in areas such as agriculture, fisheries, green technology, education, healthcare, trade, and tourism. She also highlighted the potential for deeper cultural exchanges and youth cooperation to achieve shared prosperity.
Fei Mingxing, Chinese ambassador to Samoa, Qian Bo, China's special envoy for Pacific Island countries affairs, and Zhang Xin, vice-governor of Guangdong province, also attended the meeting.
