Overview:
North Sumatra is a province located in the northern part of Sumatra Island, bordered by the Strait of Malacca to the north and the Indian Ocean to the southwest. Covering an area of 70,787 square kilometers, it has a population of 14.56 million, with Medan as its capital. Shifting cultivation is common, with main crops including rice, cassava, fruit and vegetables. The province boasts the largest plantation belt in Indonesia, producing tobacco, sisal, rubber, palm oil and coffee. Its industrial sectors include food processing, wood and metalwork, textiles, rubber, tobacco, leather, chemicals, machinery and transportation equipment.
Relations with Guangdong:
Since establishing ties, Guangdong and North Sumatra have engaged in close cooperation across various fields, including trade, agriculture, education, tourism, culture, judicial affairs and parliamentary exchanges. In April 2022, Guangdong donated medical supplies to North Sumatra. Wang Weizhong, the governor of Guangdong, sent a congratulatory letter to Edy Rahmayadi, the then governor of North Sumatra, celebrating the 20th anniversary of their partnership.
