Time of establishment of friendly relations: May 1985
Overview:
Hawaii, nestled in the North Pacific and 3,862 kilometers away from the US mainland's west coast, spans 28,300 square kilometers, with 16,600 square kilometers of land, and is home to around 1.44 million residents. Boasting a tropical climate, the islands enjoy a forest coverage rate nearing 50 percent, earning its reputation as a globally celebrated tourist haven. Honolulu, the island state capital, situated on Oahu, is Hawaii's largest city and serves as the nucleus for politics, economy, culture, and the primary maritime and aviation hub. The economy is predominantly service-based, with key sectors including tourism, military industry, light industry, and agriculture. The state's agricultural bounty encompasses sandalwood, fish, sugarcane, pineapple and coffee. Energy in Hawaii is predominantly imported. The service sector, encompassing tourism, hospitality, healthcare, finance and real estate, accounts for the lion's share of Hawaii's workforce.
Relations with Guangdong:
Since establishing friendly relations, the two regions have closely cooperated in trade, science and technology, health, education, tourism, culture, and the judiciary. In September 2020, the Guangdong government and the US Chamber of Commerce co-hosted the China (Guangdong)–US Investment Cooperation Conference in Guangzhou, with David Ige, the then Hawaii governor, sending a video message.
