The coastal areas in the west are rich in fish. Major mineral resources include limestone, copper, gold and silver.
Valparaíso is the second-largest industrial zone in Chile, accounting for around 17 percent of the nation's total industrial output, and its major industries include mineral smelting, cement, textiles, sugar refining and heat treatment factories. Tourism is also well-developed, with popular destinations including Easter Island and Viña del Mar.
The capital city, Valparaíso, serves as the seat of Chile's National Congress, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is located 120 kilometers from Santiago, the national capital. Known as the "Gateway to Chile", its port handles about a quarter of the nation's cargo volume annually.
