Gyeonggi Province, ROK

Time of establishment of friendly relations: October 2003  

Overview:

Gyeonggi Province is located in the mid-western part of the Korean Peninsula, bordered by the Military Demarcation Line to the north and the Yellow Sea to the west. It spans an area of 10,200 square kilometers and has a population of 13.55 million people. With a developed economy, it is connected to Seoul's urban areas. Its provincial government is based in Suwon city. Gyeonggi Province contributes around a quarter of the Republic of Korea (ROK)'s GDP.

Relations with Guangdong: 

Since the establishment of friendly relations between Guangdong and Gyeonggi Province, both sides have actively promoted a steadily expanding and fruitful exchange across various fields. Key exchanges include:  

In 2003, the provinces signed an agreement to build traditional garden features unique to each region. Gyeonggi Province contributed "Haidong Gyeonggi Garden", a Korean style garden in Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou, which was completed in December 2005. In return, Guangdong built "Wolhwawon Garden", a traditional Lingnan style Chinese garden, in Hyowon Park, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, completed in April 2006.

Also in 2006, the tourism departments of the two provinces signed an agreement to promote exchanges and cooperation, with annual organized tours to each side arranged. Gyeonggi Province has sent performance groups to participate in the Guangdong International Tourism and Cultural Festival for several years running.

In October 2005, the provinces signed an agreement for mutual civil servant training, whereby each side sends civil servants for a month-long exchange program.

In April 2019, Ma Xingrui, the then governor of Guangdong visited Gyeonggi Province, where the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangdong Province and its counterpart in Gyeonggi Province signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cultural heritage exchange and cooperation.

In July 2022, Wang Weizhong, the governor of Guangdong sent a congratulatory letter to Kim Dong-yeon, the governor of Gyeonggi Province.
