China's Diplomacy in the New Era
Guayas province, Ecuador

Time of establishment of friendly relations: November 2009

Overview:

Guayas province is located on the western coast of Ecuador, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Gulf of Guayaquil to the south. It covers an area of 21,000 square kilometers and has a population of about 3.8 million, making it the largest and most populous province in the country. The fertile lowland soil makes it Ecuador's most important agricultural area, producing rice, bananas, and hosting large cocoa, coffee and tropical fruit plantations. Livestock farming is primarily focused on raising beef cattle, while the province also has well-developed fishing and forestry industries. Its industrial activities include oil extraction and refining, metallurgy, chemicals, machinery, shipbuilding, food processing and rubber production. The capital, Guayaquil, is Ecuador's largest commercial and industrial city, as well as its largest coastal port, with a population of about 2.6 million.

Relations with Guangdong:

The two provinces have engaged proactively in fields such as trade, agriculture, fisheries and legislation. In 2014, their agricultural departments signed a cooperation agreement. In 2015, Huang Longyun, the then chair of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, led a delegation to visit Guayas province. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Guangdong donated anti-pandemic supplies to Guayas province, shared anti-pandemic experiences through video exchanges, and actively engaged in pandemic-related cooperation.
