Alexandria city, the capital of Alexandria Governorate, is the largest harbor in Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean, handling 60 percent of the nation's import and export cargo. It is renowned as a cultural center, tourist city and summer resort in Egypt. Major attractions include the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina, built in 2002, the Citadel of Qaitbay, the Montaza Palace of Egypt's last king Farouk I, Pompey's Pillar, and the ruins of the ancient Roman theater. Alexandria was among the earliest African place names introduced to China. Chinese scholars believe that in ancient times, China's porcelain and silk were transported via the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, passing through Alexandria en route to the Roman Empire.
