Time of establishment of friendly relations: June 2015
Overview:
Limburg province is located in the northeastern part of Belgium's Flanders region, covering an area of 2,414 square kilometers with a population of approximately 860,000. Its capital is Hasselt. The official language is Dutch, with German and French as secondary languages, while English is widely understood for business and cultural activities.
Limburg province leverages its advantageous geographical location and well-developed network of roads, railways and waterways to actively develop industries such as automobiles, logistics, clean technology, energy, life sciences, and information and communication technology.
Located close to Europe's major consumer and production centers, about 60 percent of the European Union's purchasing power comes from within a 500-kilometer radius of Limburg province, earning it the nickname "the Beating Heart of Europe". Limburg is closely connected to the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam, serving as a logistics hub for Europe. It is also Belgium's largest fruit-growing region, producing over 50 percent of the country's fruit.
Relations with Guangdong:
In June 2015, Limburg and Guangdong provinces signed an agreement to officially establish friendly relations. Since then, the two regions have maintained close ties, with frequent visits at various levels. They have engaged in practical cooperation and diverse exchange activities in areas such as trade and investment, clean technology, education and training, cultural tourism, and media promotion, yielding fruitful results.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, leaders of both provinces exchanged letters to express sympathy and support, and sent anti-pandemic supplies to each other.
In 2020, a series of events were held to celebrate the fifth anniversary of their friendship, further deepening the strong bond between the people of both regions.
