The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, a major national project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, maintained a high level of traffic volume after its trial operation commenced on Sunday, the local transportation authorities said.

As of 3 pm on Monday, 24 hours after the link opened to traffic, the volume on the mega cross-sea passage had reached 125,000 vehicles, according to the Guangdong Transportation Group.

On the first day of its traffic opening after seven years of challenging construction, residents of surrounding cities have showed high enthusiasm to experience the newly opened passage, the transportation company said.

There was a significant volume of traffic flowing in both directions, leading to periods of slow-moving traffic along the entire route, with the traffic peak reaching over 8,000 vehicles in an hour at 5 pm on Sunday.

The passage, which is located about 30 kilometers south of the Humen Bridge and 31 kilometers north of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, is a highway integrating bridges, islands, tunnels and underwater interchanges, with a total length of about 24 kilometers and relatively complex traffic conditions.
