In the late 1970s, folk painters used outlining and flat-painting techniques to integrate local flavor and decorative elements, creating the farmers' lacquer painting. The figures in the paintings usually feature exaggerated forms and bright colors.

In 2019, Zhangping farmers' painting was included in Fujian's intangible cultural heritage list.
