Fujian's cultural and tourism market booms during May Day holiday

Fujian saw a surge in cultural and tourism activities during this year's May Day holiday. Throughout the holiday period, the province received 27.17 million visits, and tourists collectively spent 21.39 billion yuan ($2.97 billion), marking increases of 25.1 percent and 26.6 percent, respectively, compared to the 2019 May Day holiday on a comparable basis.
Abundant Activities and Popular Attractions
At Three Lanes and Seven Alleys in Fuzhou, the fusion of China chic and intangible cultural heritage (ICH) created a captivating experience for visitors, with five themed routes, ICH exhibitions, and China-chic elements on offer.
Rising entertainment market
Traveling to other cities for performances has gained in popularity, particularly among young people. Fuzhou's Minyue River Town hosted a three-day music party that drew thousands of music, sports, and travel enthusiasts. Additionally, music festivals and concerts attracted a significant number of international attendees. The Genki Forest Music Festival in Xiamen attracted nearly 40,000 attendees, with almost 80 percent of whom came from outside the city.
Hot cultural and tourism consumption
Fujian's diverse cultural and tourism activities, coupled with preferential policies, have boosted holiday spending. During the holiday period, the province experienced a significant growth in tourist spending compared to visitor numbers, with Fuzhou's Three Lanes and Seven Alleys welcoming around 870,000 visitors and Quanzhou's West Street receiving over 400,000 visitors. Xiamen's Gulangyu Island also saw a peak in visitor numbers, with 218,000 visitors.
Nighttime cultural and tourism activities
Various regions in Fujian introduced nighttime cultural and tourism activities, enhancing the overall tourist experience and stimulating the holiday nighttime economy. Data indicates a substantial increase in nighttime visitor flow across the province during the holiday, with a 17.4 percent year-on-year increase and a 36.3 percent rise compared to the same period in 2019.
