The Fujian part of the national G228 highway will be built into a coastal scenic view highway, according to a construction plan released by the provincial transport department.
The coastal scenic view highway is over 1,000 kilometers and passes through Ningde, Fuzhou, Putian, Quanzhou, Xiamen, and Zhangzhou in Fujian.
A variety of demonstration sections of the highway, which integrate transportation and tourism, will be built to showcase the characteristics of each involved city such as the Mazu culture in Putian and the Maritime Silk Road in Quanzhou.
The key sections of the highway will be connected to surrounding traffic hubs and scenic spots. Various service facilities such as commercial complexes, tourist centers, and emergency rescue stations will also be built along the highway to offer services like catering and shopping as well as gasoline, charging, checkups, examination and repair for vehicles.
With a total investment of 43 billion yuan ($6.76 billion), the construction of the highway will fully commence in 2022, and the highway is expected to be fully operational by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period.
