The 0.3 square kilometer Lushun Bird Island is located in the Laotie Mountain Natural Reserve in the Bohai Sea 7.2 kilometers to the west of Dongzi Village in Shuangdaowan Sub-District. Flocks of sea gulls live on the island all year round and migrant birds rest on it as well.

Bird Island is only three nautical miles from the famous Lushun Snake Island. Since the cry of a sea gull is similar to that of a cat, Bird Island is also called Haimao (sea cat) Island. 

Haimao Island's agreeable weather, abundant rainfall, flourishing plantations, and freedom from natural enemies make it a paradise for sea gulls. In August and September, the weather turns cold. Flocks of ducks and geese rest here when flying across the Bohai Sea to Shandong Peninsula. So usually during this time, Haimao Island is extremely lively. This island is important for the study of migrant birds' routes in China.
