Updated: 2016-12-26
Dear friends,
Welcome to the website of Lushunkou city, the hospitable and friendly people of Lushunkou extend to you sincere greetings. Let's walk into Lushunkou so you can get to know and understand this wonderful area.
Lushunkou has a land area of 506.8 square kilometers and a sea area of 3,300 square kilometers, with a coastline of 170 km and a population of 300,000. Situated on the southern tip of Liaodong peninsula, Lushunkou is just 57 nautical miles from Shandong peninsula. It faces the Yellow Sea to the east and Bohai Sea to the west, and is connected to the vast hinterland of Northeast China. Lushunkou is one of the most convenient gateways from Northeast China to the Pacific Ocean, therefore it's an important connection point for the Eurasia Land Bridge and is known for "being backed by Northeast China and holding a strategic point for Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei province". And it has been regarded as a strategic area in the Far East since ancient times.
Lushunkou is a world-renowned city, with a rich history and cultural heritage. Humans settled in this area 5,000 years ago; 2,000 years ago, it was named "Muyang City" when Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty (25-220) established a fortress here; it was called "Mashijin" by the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420), "Dulizhen" during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), "Shizikou" in the Liao and Jin periods (916-1234). In 1371, the first Ming emperor Zhu Yuanzhang sent soldiers from Shandong across the sea to land in "Shizikou" in order to recover east Liaoning, and the place was renamed "Lushunkou", which means "a smooth journey" in Chinese, to mark the Ming troops' safe trip, and the name has been in use ever since. Lushunkou was involved in two wars — in 1894 and 1904 — therefore people say "Lushunkou records half of China's modern history". In August 1945, the Red Army of the Soviet Union went into Lushunkou and disarmed the Japanese army here, and in May 1955 Lushunkou returned to its motherland when the last batch of Soviet troops returned to the USSR. Today, Lushunkou has become the main district of Dalian. A number of universities are located here, such as Dalian Medical University, Dalian University of Foreign Languages, and Liaoning University of International Business, making Lushunkou a veritable university town.
