Shaped like a leaping fish, the 103-m-tall Doumen District Tourism Development Center is now under construction. The architecture symbolizes Doumen's prosperous future, and is rooted in distinctive Shatian Folk Culture.
Eye-catching landmark
An official from the Doumen Housing & Urban-Rural Development Bureau said the building in Yunfeng Park east of the Jianfeng Bridge will be a significant landmark for the Huangyang River Comprehensive Development Project. It occupies 14,000 sq m with a floor area of 6,061 sq m. The architecture comes with a price tag of 110 million yuan ($16 million).
The edifice recognizes the ancient Tanka people whose culture is named after sand fields -- Shatian. They are an ethnic subgroup who have traditionally lived on junks in coastal areas, notably Doumen.
The district government plans to invest 2.75 billion yuan ($399 million) this year in infrastructure at Doumen and Fushan new towns, both being part of the West Wing Eco-New Town of Zhuhai.
Under construction for years, the comprehensive development project, including both banks of the Huangyang River, starts at the Jing’an Second Bridge and runs southward to Huafa Aquatic Vila Residential Community. Costing 1.5 billion yuan ($218 million), the area has a length of 11 km and covers 10 sq km.
The project will cost 200 million yuan ($29 million) with focus on eco-environment works, municipal public-use support facilities, and land acquisition. Other major projects, such as an exhibition center and civic park, are being designed.

43 accelerated projects
The 6.8 sq km Doumen New Town occupies the largest area of West Wing Eco-New Town, exceeding one-third of the start zone. An investment of 1.52 billion yuan ($221 million) will be used to promote 43 projects this year. Twenty-two projects deal with municipal infrastructure, 12 public service, five industry-city integration, one ecological low carbon, and three Sponge City construction.
As for city-industry integration, the R&D center of HP (Zhuhai) Smart City Complex has been completed and main works of some major buildings in the living support area have been capped. The main building outer wall of Doumen’s first five-star hotel has been finished; it will come into service by year-end. Meanwhile, other R&D centers and incubation bases are in smooth progress to improve associated industries within the range.
Moreover, Doumen New Town will accelerate land leveling in Huxin Area, an underwater steel trestle of the Jitimen Grand Bridge on Shuanghu Road, and public service facilities such as schools and hospitals.
The 2.5-sq-km Fushan New Town will be labeled to develop city-industry integration. It will have more than 40 projects in infrastructure underway this year. The 1.23 billion yuan ($178 million) investment will not only come from government funds, but also from a new financing pattern of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP). The Fushan Technological Entrepreneurship Center and Fushan New Type Business Incubator will be prioritized to develop an image window of Fushan Industrial New Town and an important platform of innovation-driven initiatives.
