Jishan Antiphonal Singing at Mid-Autumn Festival

updated : 2016-12-13

Taking root in Jishan Village of Tangjiawan Town in the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the more than 400-year-old Jishan Cow Song was first created and sung by cattlemen in the field.

The Jishan Cow Song fair takes place at Mid-Autumn Festival with rich content covering farming, life, folk customs, landscapes, riddle guessing and solving, antiphonal love songs, philosophy, and so on.

Relying on a hill behind and facing the sea in the front, Jishan used to encompass an inner village for farming and an outer village for fishing. If the outer village won the singing, it would presage a harvest in fishing and vice versa.

The singing fair included a folk song contest, folk song creation, antiphonal singing, solo, choir, and improvisation.
