Of all the hundreds of famous historical and cultural cities in China, the city of Yangzhou stands out for its lanes and streets and its old town area, which were built during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties and cover a total area of 5 square kilometers. They have more than 600 alleys, many of which are very short and intertwining and extending in different directions to form a dense web.
These connect the lives of the residents and are the source of many customs and affairs in Yangzhou. An old saying has it that anyone who comes to Yangzhou without walking through its alleyways doesn’t really visit Yangzhou and that anyone who visits Yangzhou without seeing the inside of its residences doesn't know Yangzhou.
