UAV helps electricity power supply of Jizhou

In recent years, with the fast development of the tourism economy, electricity power consumption has increased rapidly. Economic development and people's livelihoods have set higher requirements for the regular inspection of distribution lines and equipment. Therefore, since 2021, the State Grid Tianjin Jizhou Company has been creating an in-depth plan to vigorously explore a new mode of inspection using UAVs, using the Jizhou mountain area as a pilot site.

On October 4, Tian Jiawei, the technical director of the operation and maintenance department of the State Grid Tianjin Jizhou Company, operated the UAVs to carry out an inspection of the Luoshan 216 line in the northern mountainous area of Tianjin.

As the "Back Garden of Beijing and Tianjin" and the only mid mountain area in Tianjin, Jizhou has a mountainous area of 840 square kilometers. There are 49 power distribution lines in mountainous and forested areas, and the length of the lines reaches 864 kilometers.

"Many distribution lines in mountainous areas are built on hillsides or hilltops, which are inaccessible to vehicles and personnel, thereby making operation and maintenance work difficult and risky. Rainy days pose a significant threat when carrying out inspections, the mountain roads get wet and slippery, and climbing is a very challenging task," Tian said, "But this year, after a year of tirals, the UAVs have already been applied to inspections in these areas, playing an important role in the summer."

In recent years, the tourism economy of rural homes in northern mountainous areas of Tianjin has developed rapidly. The number of bed-and-breakfast businesses has doubled, which has become a heavy burden on local distribution lines. In order to better find problems, such as the overheating of equipment, staff must strengthen night patrols. The application of UAVs has greatly improved work efficiency.

Since last year, the State Grid Tianjin Jizhou Company has organized more than 200 inspections of the distribution network, and found more than 330 potential defects and engineering process problems. It used to take 4-5 hours to inspect a mountain route, but now it has been shortened to less than 1 hour.

Since 2021, when the State Grid Tianjin Jizhou Company initially established the northern mountainous area of Jizhou as a pilot site for UAVs inspection, the company has promoted this method to ten municipal electricity power supply enterprises. Meanwhile, it has established an operation management system for UAVs and accelerated the training process of staff, so as to support the digital transformation of distribution network operation and maintenance.
