The 5th meeting of China-Singapore supreme courts joint working group was held in Beijing on Oct 19. Yang Wanming, vice-president of the Supreme People's Court (SPC) of China, and Steven Chong, justice of appeal of the Supreme Court of Singapore, attended the meeting. The two sides held in-depth exchanges on bilateral judicial cooperation.

Yang acknowledged the continuously deepening cooperation between the top courts of the two countries, entailing close communications between the chief justices, six legal and judicial roundtables and close cooperation in international commercial dispute resolution, all of which have yielded fruitful results. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative, which poses new opportunities for judicial cooperation between the two countries, he said, adding that China’s SPC is willing to join hands with its Singaporean counterpart to jointly promote the implementation of the meeting outcomes under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, make full preparations for the seventh China-Singapore legal and judicial roundtable, and continue to deepen and substantiate bilateral judicial cooperation.

In his speech, Chong raised his hope that the top courts of both countries will continue to maintain close communication, engage in active discussions on strategic roadmap for future judicial cooperation, and jointly advance the judicial undertakings of both countries.
