Anticipation builds for the 2025 Baicaoyuan Lantern Show
Guangyuan in Southwest China's Sichuan province, the hometown of Empress Wuzetian of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), is set to hold the Baicaoyuan Lantern Show this Spring Festival.
Over 200 artisans are currently hard at work crafting the intricate lanterns that will illuminate the celebration, bringing an air of festivity to the city.
Zhang Kunkun, deputy general manager of a local cultural media company, said this year's festival is themed around Shudao culture, a tribute to the ancient roads to Sichuan, and aligns with the Year of the Snake. The event creatively integrates historical narratives, classical poetry, folk customs, authentic cuisine and regional cultural heritage, offering a rich tapestry of cultural experiences.
The festival will feature energy-efficient neon displays, creating breathtaking visual landscapes. A tri-sensory approach — blending sight, sound and touch — will highlight advanced lighting technologies, delivering a truly immersive experience for visitors.
Building on the resounding success of last year, this year's lantern show will introduce nearly 100 unique installations, promising a fresh and extraordinary experience. Centered on the "Empress Hometown" cultural identity, the displays artfully intertwine a timeline of well-loved historical and cultural tales, ensuring delightful surprises at every corner.
Colorful parades, including the "Empress Costume Parade," mascot and clown performances, and traditional folk processions, will bring Guangyuan's rich cultural legacy to life.
Complementing the lantern displays are captivating activities such as Dunhuang-style dances, instrumental performances, Sichuan opera face-changing acts, and interactive experiences like poetry gatherings and Hanfu dress-up sessions. Together, these events guarantee an engaging and unforgettable celebration for all who attend.
