The 2024 "Scholars on Shudao" winter social sciences event was held from Dec 18 to 20, hosted by the municipal publicity department and the federation of social science circles in Guangyuan, Sichuan province.

More than 50 experts traveled along the historical Jinniu and Baoxie roads, visiting the city's Microlithic Archaeology Museum, the Hanzhong Museum and China Plank Road Museum in nearby Shaanxi province. During their journey, they explored innovative strategies for the preservation, inheritance and utilization of the historic areas.

A testament to ancient ingenuity

Shudao, an essential thoroughfare of ancient China, stands as a remarkable testament to human ingenuity. According to Professor Feng Suiping from Shaanxi University of Technology, the construction of plank roads in the perilous Qinling-Daba Mountain range showcases ancient engineering brilliance.

"The extensive and enduring nature of these constructions is unparalleled worldwide," he said.

A conduit of cultural exchange

Beyond its role as a transportation artery, Shudao played a pivotal role in cultural dissemination. Professor Li Yongxian from Sichuan University highlighted its significance in connecting the Sichuan Basin to the Central Plains and fostering global cultural exchanges.

"Travelers like Marco Polo and the Japanese poet-monk Sesson Yubai traversed Shudao, spreading China's cultural and natural heritage to the world," Li said.

A living repository of history

Professor Ma Qiang from Southwest University emphasized Shudao's value as a cultural and historical treasure. Its remnants, such as plank road ruins and stone inscriptions, bear witness to the ancient engineering feats achieved in daunting terrains and embody a rich legacy of cultural traditions, including stone inscription art and religious heritage.

Challenges in promoting Shudao culture

While significant strides have been made in the excavation and protection of Shudao, challenges remain in enhancing its cultural influence. Experts pointed to initiatives like the live-action interactive drama The Jiameng History as exemplary efforts in literary storytelling. They expressed hope that diverse media formats, such as film and television, could further popularize Shudao culture, bringing its historical and cultural essence into everyday life.

The event underscored the ongoing commitment of scholars and cultural advocates to safeguarding and revitalizing the legacy of Shudao for future generations.
