Hope, a passionate researcher from Philadelphia, has completed her 24th trip along the shudao, an ancient road system in Sichuan province that dates back over two millennia.
Through her book and website, she has shared the stunning landscapes, rich cultural traditions and unique customs of the Shudao, acting as an informal ambassador for this historic route.
The Chinese edition, published by Sichuan Ethnic Publishing House, is a translation of Hope's 2007 travel guide, Guide to Hiking China's Old Road to Shu. It details her journeys along the ancient path, highlighting its scenic beauty, traditional customs, local food, architecture and historical landmarks.
Hope also praises China's long-standing efforts in ecological preservation and provides several recommended hiking routes along the Shudao, as well as an overview of its cultural and historical significance.

Beautifully illustrated and vividly written, the book serves both as a practical guide and a historical record. The book exemplifies how foreign scholars can help share China's stories with a global audience.
Although Hope could not attend the launch, she sent a video message from the US, expressing her love for the Shudao and encouraging others to experience its beauty.
Veteran translator Qiu Tingting, who worked on the Chinese edition, noted that Hope's deep affection for the Shudao is evident throughout the book. Qiu was particularly impressed by Hope's unique approach, comparing her experiences with those of historical Western travelers who once walked the same path, adding layers of intrigue to the narrative.
Chen Yang, a long-time companion on many of Hope's Shudao adventures, shared his memories at the event, hoping that more international visitors will be inspired to explore the Shudao and discover its wonders.
