Chen's connection with renowned traveler Xu Xiake adds another layer of intrigue to Sheshan's history. Introduced by scholar Wang Jihai, Xu Xiake visited Chen Jiru seeking assistance in composing a birthday tribute for his mother.
Impressed by Xu Xiake's love of travel and exploration, Chen Jiru bestowed upon him the name "Xiake", signifying one who roams in the clouds.
Xu Xiake's subsequent visits to Sheshan, totaling five in all, were made possible with Chen Jiru's encouragement and support.
Thanks to Chen's assistance, Xu completed his legendary journey through southwestern China, becoming known as the pioneer of landscape exploration in the country. His extensive travels culminated in the monumental work Travel Diaries of Xu Xiake, which remains a testament to his adventurous spirit and dedication to exploration.
Despite the passing of time, the bond between the two men, as well as their connection to Sheshan, continues to inspire and fascinate visitors.
