Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden held plant exhibits to celebrate the annual International Fascination of Plants Day on May18.

The exhibits were held at Shanghai Natural History Museum, including aromatic and medicinal plants, endangered plants as well as plants related with human nutrition and health. Chen Xiaoya, director of Chenshan Botanical Garden and academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, gave a speech on the role of plants in the natural ecosystem of the city.

In Zuibaichi Park in Songjiang district, the botanical garden held an exhibit of rare and endangered plants to raise environmental awareness.

The International Fascination of Plants Day was first launched by the European Plant Science Organization. Botanical gardens, research labs, schools and museums held plant-based activities to encourage people realize the importance of plants and plant science in agriculture and sustainability.

Celebrations in China were initiated by Chinese Society for Plant Biology, a Shanghai-based non-profit organization devoted to the development of plant biology science and technology in China.
