After Shanghai had some success with its first World Cities Day, it decided to arrange a photographic event with the Municipal Tourism Administration to get several dozen professional photographers to take photos of the city over a 24-hour period, at local landmarks and attractions.
The administration had received 12,000 submissions, by Nov 1, of everything from ordinary people to tourists, to places of entertainment and folk marketplaces.
They also asked almost 2,000 freelancers scattered here and there to record the cityscape and amateur online photo enthusiasts to take snapshots of their lives and share them with others via Sina Weibo.
They suggested holding a “Round-the–Clock” activity for other cities to record moments at different times, and got a warm response from people in Paris, London, New York and half a dozen other cities.
