Between the southern and northern peaks of East Sheshan Mountain, there is a natural rock. It looks like a wooden knocker used when monks chant Sutras.

On it, there is a club. For this reason, it is called the Wooden Knocker Rock. Under the rock, there is an ancient cave. Legend has it that a monk passed away in the cave long long ago. On cloudy days, if you listen carefully by pressing your ear against the rock, you may hear the faint sound of a wooden knocker and intermittent singing and talking.

This is the famous scene of "Sheshan Zhuxiao". According to the explanation of experts, the sound of a wooden knocker is in fact the sound of dripping water in the cave. As the cave is hollow, the sound of the water attains resonance during transmission in the air. The sound transmitted to the outside of the cave is like the sound of a wooden knocker. The cave is surrounded by bamboos. Inspired by the scene, Chen Jiru, a scholar in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)created his famous painting "Xiao Xiang".
