Qingdao WCNA launches new materials innovation base with research hub

Qingdao West Coast New Area has officially launched the Dongjiakou New Materials Technological Innovation Base, accompanied by the unveiling of a dedicated New Materials Industry Research Institute.

Strategically positioned near Dongjiakou Port and a provincial-level chemical industry park, the base targets frontier sectors such as high-end chemical materials, green energy materials, and functional composites. It aims to bridge a critical gap in the industrial chain by providing pilot-scale production platforms for universities, research institutions, and enterprises.

The facility features four key functional zones: pilot operation, management services, logistics and storage, and public utilities. Its eight versatile pilot workshops can accommodate up to 30 concurrent projects in the first phase. Supporting infrastructure includes a dedicated power supply, comprehensive waste treatment systems, and an integrated management building housing offices, laboratories, and an intelligent control center, ensuring safe, eco-friendly, and efficient operations.

As the base's operational engine, the newly unveiled New Materials Industry Research Institute will foster deep collaboration among universities, research bodies, and leading companies. It is designed to create a cohesive "industry-academia-research-application" ecosystem, accelerating the transition from lab innovation to commercial production.

Leveraging the local industrial foundation and the base's platforms, the institute will engage in diverse activities including contract R&D, technology transfer, consultancy, joint operations, and equity investment. It targets over 50 patents and at least eight commercialized projects within three years, positioning itself as a key driver of scientific innovation and sustained technological advancement for the region's industrial upgrade.
