New project to unveil marine fisheries revolution in Qingdao

The modern marine fisheries technology industrial park project, backed by Qingdao Gather Great Ocean Algae Industry Group, has launched in Qingdao West Coast New Area. With a total investment of 200 million yuan ($27.9 million), the project seeks to establish itself as a leading modern fisheries comprehensive industry demonstration base in China.

The project covers a total area of 8.67 hectares, with the first phase spanning 6.19 hectares and a planned construction area of approximately 50,000 square meters. Utilizing the region's rich freshwater and abundant seawater resources, the first phase will see the development of modern fisheries facilities, including salmon broodstock workshops, new variety breeding workshops, fine breed breeding workshops, and bait culture workshops.

"We are employing an innovative model of 'agricultural comprehensive development + technology demonstration and promotion', with a focus on seedling breeding and aquaculture of valuable fish species like salmon and murray cod," stated the project leader. "Upon completion, the project aims to establish a complete industry value chain from seedling breeding to processing and sales."

The industrial park has established a close partnership with the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, to tackle critical technologies in the marine fisheries seed industry sector, such as freshwater domestication and high-density aquaculture of salmon. This collaboration is geared towards addressing China's historical dependence on imported salmon fry, with the ultimate goal of creating a self-reliant and controllable system for salmon seed breeding post-project completion.
