With the final strand of cable precisely put in place, the main cable installation for the Yanji Yangtze River Bridge, the world's first four main cable steel truss suspension bridge with different verticals, was recently completed, marking a significant milestone for the mega project in Central China's Hubei province.
Behind this remarkable achievement lies the contribution of Qingdao Special Iron and Steel Co Ltd, located in Qingdao West Coast New Area, East China's Shandong province. The company developed the 2,100 MPa-grade bridge cable galvanized steel wire coil with high-strength properties, providing solid support for the vital river-crossing infrastructure and showcasing China's robust manufacturing capabilities.
The main cable, as the most important component of a cable steel truss suspension bridge, is often referred to as the "lifeline" of the structure. A single main cable boasts a total tension of 145,000 metric tons, equivalent to lifting two medium-sized aircraft carriers.
The research team designed a special domestic production line, breaking through with innovative online isothermal heat treatment technology. This advancement allows real-time control of temperature, pressure, and other parameters to enhance strength while maintaining toughness.
The 2,100 MPa-grade cable steel wire technology not only significantly enhances the mechanical performance of the product but also saves energy, reduces consumption, and benefits the environment.
