An ecological environment management project involving the Licui and Zhangcui rivers in Qingdao, Shandong province, is currently underway.

The project is a vital part of the city's three-year action plan regarding urban renewal and construction.

The two rivers play a prominent role in Qingdao's central urban area. According to the plan, the Licui and Zhangcui rivers will be transformed into urban ecological corridors with many functions.

New bridges, roads and pipelines are being built along a 5.5-kilometer stretch along the Licui River from Junfeng Road to the estuary. Ecological restoration and flood control works are also being carried out.

"Follow-up works such as the construction of an architectural station and pedestrian overpass will be carried out soon. Our team will spare no effort to create a harmonious urban riverside environment in Licang district," said Zou Bin, project manager of Zhongqing Jianan Group.

About 120,000 cubic meters of silt have been dredged from the Licui and Zhangcui rivers so far. Ecological restoration works on both sides from Junfeng Road to Chongqing Road and the north bank of Shengli Bridge to Huanwan Road have also begun.

Zhou Xiang, project leader of Qingdao Licang Municipal Engineering Construction and Maintenance Co Ltd, said the Licui River ecological project aims to optimize urban functions, improve living environment and increase the sense of happiness and satisfaction among citizens.
