The 59 A-level scenic spots monitored in the eastern coastal city of Qingdao, Shandong province received 519,800 tourists during the just concluded three-day Duanwu Festival holiday.

The Qingdao municipal bureau of culture and tourism as well as local scenic spots have launched a slew of measures to attract tourists with strict epidemic control protocols, so as to facilitate the recovery of the tourism sector.

During the holiday, Laoshan Mountain, a popular tourism destination in the city, received 102,400 tourists, a year-on-year increase of 40.27 percent, generating operating revenue of 1.44 million yuan ($216,041). Qingdao Underwater World received 28,400 tourists, up 13.08 percent year-on-year, with operating revenue of 99,500 yuan. Qingdao Polar Ocean World welcomed 20,100 visitors, with operating revenue hitting 3.19 million yuan.

Qingdao Fantawild Dreamland received 9,200 tourists, with operating revenue of 2.09 million yuan. The Tsingtao Beer Museum received 16,600 visitors, up 17.52 percent year-on-year, with operating revenue of 39,700 yuan.

A total of 50 star-ranked hotels were also monitored during the holiday, indicating an average occupancy rate of 31.01 percent. The occupancy rate of five-star hotels was 45.87 percent, four-star hotels 26.21 percent and three-star hotels 18.83 percent.

According to local officials, study tours, parent-child tours, rural sightseeing, folk culture experiences, fruit picking and other themed activities proved popular among tourists during the holiday.

Recently, 11 State-owned A-level scenic spots in Qingdao announced free admissions from June 1 to Dec 31 this year, bringing the total number of scenic spots with free admission to 56 in the city.

Duanwu Festival, also known as Dragon Boat Festival, is one of the traditional festivals in China. The festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month on the Chinese lunar calendar, and traditional celebrations include eating zongzi, drinking realgar wine, and racing dragon boats.
