Yandunjiao village in Rongcheng, Weihai, Shandong province, was one of seven Chinese villages on the Best Tourism Villages 2024 by the United Nations World Tourism Organization at its 122nd session of the Executive Council on Nov 11 in Cartagena, Colombia.

One of the main attractions of Yandunjiao is its large population of whooper swans. The village's pristine environment and abundance of food make it an ideal habitat for these majestic creatures.

To ensure the well-being of these elegant birds, the villagers have made significant efforts to protect their natural habitat. Industrial activities have been relocated, and coastlines are cleaned regularly. Additionally, the village has established strict rules to protect the swans, such as prohibiting the use of fireworks and loud noises. Thanks to these conservation efforts, the number of whooper swans wintering in Yandunjiao has increased dramatically over the years.

Another distinctive feature of Yandunjiao is its traditional seaweed-thatched houses. These unique dwellings, constructed with stone walls and seaweed roofs, offer a glimpse into the village's rich maritime history. The village has preserved over 200 of these historic houses, which have become a major tourist attraction.

In recent years, Yandunjiao has made use of its natural and cultural resources to develop a thriving tourism industry. Cafes, restaurants, and craft shops have opened to cater to the growing number of visitors. The village also hosts a variety of cultural events, including swan photography workshops, music concerts, and exhibitions of traditional artifacts.

By combining ecological conservation with cultural preservation and tourism development, Yandunjiao village has become a shining example of sustainable rural development.
