In recent years, Shandong province has accelerated the development of a standardization organization system and technology system in the marine sector. It has achieved strong results in improving capacity to formulate and revise standards and provide standardized management services, local media reported.

Shandong has launched research into marine powerhouse standard systems, focusing on the marine industry, marine science and education culture, protection of marine ecosystems, marine public services, and marine management. The research covers international standards, national standards, industry standards, local standards and group standards.

Two institutes based in Shandong, namely the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) and the First Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources, proposed and formulated an international standard for marine surveys, which was published on Dec 10 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The standard provides requirements and recommendations for conducting marine surveys of interstitial biota in marine sediments.

The national standard Technical Guide for Marine Ranch Construction led by Shandong province was recently released, boasting the first national standard for marine ranch construction in China.

The standards can provide direct guidance for marine ranch construction nationwide, as well as provide common technical processes and guidance for the subsequent establishment of marine ranch-related industries, groups and local standards (norms and regulations), said Zhu Qian, an official of Yantai.

The standards will play an important role in guiding and supporting the high-quality development of marine ranching in China, improving the stability of marine ranching ecological and economic functions, added Zhu.
