Gong Bengao, mayor of Rushan, East China's Shandong province, came under the spotlight again when he was featured using fluent English to speak to a French cellar master in a TV program.

The program recorded his one-day inspection tour in Taiyi Lake winery town, where he promoted Rushan wine and oysters.

The town combines grape planting, winemaking and tourism, and is a landmark rural revitalization project in Rushan.

Wine and oyster are two pillar industries in Rushan and the local government has been promoting them for years as part of revitalization efforts.

Gong became an internet celebrity after appearing on a TV program by major news website CCTV.com in 2017. He was invited to promote local products at the program and his bilingual introduction of local products had greatly impressed the public.

Rushan, located in the Jiaodong Peninsula and near the Yellow Sea, boasts about 200 kilometers of coastline and good water quality for aquaculture. In addition, the two seagoing rivers Rushan and Huanglei bring abundant nutrients for oyster farming, which makes Rushan one of the best production bases for oysters in the world.

Rushan oyster is famous for its freshness and sweetness and is rich in microelements. The farming area, yield and output value of Rushan oyster ranks the highest among all counties in China. Rushan has also been dubbed "the land of the Chinese oyster" and a demonstration county with a signature industry.

As a key growing area of wine grapes in Jiaodong Peninsula, Rushan began to expand the plantation of grapes early in the 1960s. Some local wine brands have bagged international honors and domestic awards.
