An exhibition on works related to the calligraphy of Zhang Jian (1853-1926), a renowned industrial magnate, educator, philanthropist, and scholar in Nantong, recently kicked off at the Jianghai Museum in Nantong.

The exhibition showcases 115 pieces of inscriptions and copybooks for calligraphy by Zhang, who was reputed as China's most distinguished calligrapher during the reign of emperors Tongzhi and Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The works were accumulated by a private collector over the past two decades.

Among the works on display is an inscription on the gravestone of Hendrik de Rijke witnessing the contributions of the Dutch hydraulic expert in Nantong. The ground certificate is an inscription on precipices, providing evidence of the land in Nantong chosen for the burial of Shen Shou, an outstanding embroiderer.

In addition, the exhibition presents 19 calligraphy works by Zhang himself. It will run until April 15, during which time symposiums about the exhibition will also be held at the museum.
