Nantong, which is renowned for being a manufacturing hub, is prioritizing the development of its optoelectronic industry and has formed a comprehensive industrial chain for coordinated development in various fields, according to the city's top official.

The city currently has more than 300 enterprises involved in the sector and the number of related scientific and technical research institutes located within account for 42 percent of Nantong's total number of sci-tech bodies, said Wang Hui, Party secretary of Nantong, at the opening ceremony of Photonics Asia 2021, which took place in Nantong on Oct 10.

Wang said that the local government has formulated an action plan to boost the industry by 2025. It has also set up an equity fund to support companies in terms of establishment, innovation, and expansion.

The Photonics Asia has been held 10 times since 2001, offering an important platform for global scientists to conduct academic exchanges.

This year's event, which took place both online and offline, attracted more than 800 domestic and overseas experts and business leaders and the latest sci-tech achievements and products.

An optoelectronic exhibition was also held on the sideline from Oct 10 to 12. More than 50 domestic exhibitors showcased products such as optical sensors, laser devices, optical materials, as well as medical equipment.
