Nantong plans to spend 80 million yuan ($11.2 million) to improve the environment of the waterways in the Five Mountains scenic area, according to information released by the city’s financial bureau on Oct 11.

Officials said a panel of experts have gathered to discuss the detailed improvement plans for dozens of river courses in the area.

Experts suggested that the flow rates should be taken into consideration when adjusting and upgrading the location of water gates.

A range of methods to conserve the ecological system along the rivers are expected to be implemented, to achieve steady and safe progress for the project.

Experts also stressed that they will comprehensively analyze the different situations, from upstream to downstream, to ensure sustainable development of the environment.

The improvement of waterways environment is just part of a landscaping project in the Five Mountains area, according to local officials.

Further measures will be taken to make the area more attractive to locals and visitors.
